Up at 4:20 AM to Cook Steel Cut Oats
This morning I was awake at 4:20 AM. This is not a time non- farmers should rise. I did it because Sharon had to “open” this morning. Opening means she is the first manager in and that means getting to work by 6 AM.
I get up because I am a good husband and I get up and make breakfast. This morning it was steel cut oats with fruit. If you are not familiar with steel cut oats they are whole grain groats. Groats are the internal part of the oat kernel. Steel cut refers to the fact they have been cut into pieces.
We first started eating them when we started the Fast Metabolism Diet. They are supposed to help rev up your metabolism. Not only that but we think they taste better.
The draw back is they take much longer to cook. You have to simmer them 30 minutes after adding them to boiling water. Lucky for me I know a secret.
The night before add 4 parts water to 1 part oats. In other words a cup of oats and 4 cups of water. Bring the water with the oats to a boil and let it boil 1 minute. Turn off heat and cover with lid. Let it sit on stove overnight.
The next morning add a half a cup of water, stir and heat on medium heat till hot. You can also microwave if you are in a hurry. About 45 seconds. You can refrigerate and save any unused portions for up to a week.
I learned this trick from reading the Fast Metabolism Diet book.
This morning we had the oats with pieces of mango and pineapple. We bought the mango and pineapple from Sam’s. It comes frozen in 3 pound bags.
After I fed her she left for work and I tried to nap for an hour before James and John had to wake up.
Ever try napping with two Boxers? They snore very loud!
I cooked James his usual breakfast of 2 eggs over easy with buttered toast.
John’s breakfast was a caffeine drink.
I took John to work while James ate.
When I got back James’ bus was driving by without James. The bus was 10 minutes early. I went in through the garage to tell James I was home and I could take him to school but he was running out the front door.
The bus back tracks after it goes around the neighborhood so James caught it at the corner.
Minor disaster adverted.
Then I got the mind tingling delight of rolling the trash to the road.
So far that’s all I got; a recipe to cook steel cut oats and a few minor morning chores.
Talk to you later.
